PhotoVoice
Between Two Worlds is a PhotoVoice project documenting Rohan Acharya's journey as a Nepalese-American through 35mm film photography. This work explores the contrasts between communal life in Nepal and the individualism of America, reflecting on identity, family ties, and the bittersweet experience of balancing two cultures.
Before his summer trip to Nepal, we set out to capture authentic moments that reveal the depth of his connection to his heritage. I gave Rohan a film camera loaded with intention—each frame meant to tell a story. Through weddings, family gatherings, and everyday life, Rohan reflected on what it means to belong to two worlds: the closeness of tradition-rich Nepal and the fast-paced, individualistic life in the U.S.
The images highlight family bonds, the joy and warmth of community, and the quiet weight of growing up apart from his extended family. Together, we sought to move beyond stereotypes and reveal a raw, honest view of Nepalese life, while also touching on the realities of cultural assimilation, mental health stigma, and the longing to maintain connections across borders.
PhotoVoice allows personal stories like Rohan’s to become powerful sociological statements—showing how identity is shaped by lived experience. This project invites viewers into an intimate reflection of family, culture, and the search for belonging.
